Workman Smith Riley, 89 of Edgefield, SC wife of the late James Riley, went home to be with her Lord on Sunday July 7, 2024, with her daughters by her side.

Workman was born in McCormick County, South Carolina as the daughter of the late John and Neely Doolittle Smith. She was a faithful member of Red Oak Grove Baptist Church and a loving childcare worker for over twenty years while nurturing and caring for children in her home daycare. She was a seamstress and made quilts that she enjoyed giving to family and friends.

Mrs. Riley is survived by her daughters Penny Welch and Faye Usry both of Edgefield; grandson Alex Welch of Edgefield; sisters Marion Marrow of Edgefield, Edna Clark of Greenwood, and Joyce Insley of Warrenville. She is also survived by a host of nieces and nephews. Predeceased by her husband, daughter Jane Riley, sons-in-law Edward Usry and Joey Welch, parents Neely and John Smith, 3 sisters Lena Turner, Mary Poole, Ruth Gallaway and four brothers Jay Smith, Earl Smith, Alfred Smith and Harold Smith.

A visitation will be held from 10:00am-11:00am on Thursday, July 11, 2024. Visitation will be held at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, 801 Columbia Rd. Edgefield, SC. A service will immediately take place at 11:00am at the funeral home after visitation with burial to follow at Sunset Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Johnston, SC.

The family has asked in lieu of flowers memorials may be made to Red Oak Grove Baptist Church, 96 Bussey Rd. Modoc, SC 29838, or a charity of one's choice. The family would like to thank Dr. Hugh Morgan and staff as well as the Edgefield County Hospital and staff for their excellent care over the years. A special thank you to Elaine Johnson for her care over the last few weeks.
