Obituary

Virginia Burton Kemp, 88, gained her eternal reward on January 7, 2026. She was a devoted wife, mother, grandmother, and greatgrandmother, who will be remembered for her gentle, loving spirit, and the gracious southern charm that defined her life.

Born on July 8, 1937, in Trenton, South Carolina, Virginia was the daughter of Elijah F. Burton and Samuella Padget Burton. After finishing her early years at the local school in Trenton, she attended and graduated from Edgefield High School. With a passion for learning and a heart for teaching, she went on to earn her degree in Education from George Peabody College for Teachers in Nashville, Tennessee.

Virginia's adventurous spirit led her westward to Golden, Colorado, where she began her teaching career. However, it was back home in Edgefield where she found her greatest joy—marrying the love of her life, John W. Kemp Jr. Their union spanned an extraordinary 64 years filled with love and partnership. Together they built not only a family but also a successful business: John Kemp Antiques. The business became well known for its exceptional collection of English and early American furniture which reflected their shared appreciation for history and craftsmanship.

Virginia's legacy continues through her family: her husband John; sons John Kemp III (Sarah) and Charles Kemp (Michelle); grandchildren Jakob Kemp (Samantha), Caleb Kemp (Marlee), Johnathan Kemp, Bradley Kemp, and Dorothy Kate Kemp; and great-grandsons Shepherd Kemp and Stetson Kemp. She also held a special place in her heart for her loving, supportive and attentive niece Cheryl Seamon.

She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Clara Burton, Frances Cook, and Dorothy Smith; and brothers Marshall Burton and Robert E."Bobby" Burton.

In her youth, Virginia was an avid basketball player, a passion that evolved into enthusiastic support for her grandchildren's athletic endeavors over the years. Later in life, she enjoyed socializing with friends when routinely playing bridge or during active participation in a local book club.

A woman of faith, Virginia grew up attending Trenton Methodist Church before becoming a member of Edgefield First Baptist Church. There she served faithfully over the years through various volunteer roles that reflected both her devotion to God and commitment to community.

Virginia will be remembered for many qualities, her gentle nature, kind heart, loving presence, patient demeanor, determined spirit, practical wisdom, resourcefulness, organizational skill, and ever-helpful attitude, all of which left lasting impressions on those fortunate enough to know her.

The family would like to thank a previous special caregiver, Mary Rouse, as well as Dr. Buddy Turner (deceased), Dr. George Rainsford, and Dr. Tami Massey for their loving care over the years. Also, the family extends heartfelt gratitude to the administration and staff of Aiken Memory Care and Enhabit Hospice for their compassionate care over the last 23 months.

A visitation will be held on Friday, January 9, 2026, from 5:00-7:00pm at the residence of John and Virginia. A celebration of Virginia's life will be held on Saturday, January 10, 2026, at 11:00am at Edgefield First Baptist Church, 212 Church Street, Edgefield SC.
