Meta Webster Whitlock, a woman of spirit and compassion, departed this life on May 5, 2026, in Columbia, South Carolina. Born on September 19, 1952, in the city of Savannah, Georgia, Meta's journey was marked by an unwavering dedication to public service, heartfelt devotion to family and friends, and a love for the natural world and its creatures.
A proud alumna of Central Wesleyan College in Central, South Carolina, Meta earned her Bachelor’s degree with distinction. Her career was distinguished and impactful, having served her role as Assistant Director of The South Carolina Retirement System, where she exemplified leadership and commitment. Upon retirement, she found fulfillment working at The Riverbanks Botanical Garden in Columbia, where her passion for gardening and nature flourished.
Meta's strength and loving nature drew many into her life and she was cherished by a wide circle of friends who admired her generous spirit and steadfast loyalty. She was a devoted member of the ASPCA, Best Friends Animal Society, and Alley Cat Allies, organizations that resonated deeply with her soul and her love for animals.
Together with her beloved husband, Frank P. Whitlock, Meta embraced the joys of travel, exploring destinations such as Egypt, Wales, England, Scotland, and Ireland. These adventures enriched her life and deepened her appreciation for the diverse beauty of the world.
Meta is survived by her devoted husband, Frank P. Whitlock; her beloved sister, Rosa Caine; her dear nieces, Andrea Kinard and RosaMarie Williams; and her brother, Herbie Webster. She was preceded in death by her loving parents, RosaLee Webster and James Webster, affectionately known as "Bubba."
Though Meta has passed on, her legacy of strength, kindness, and unwavering love for both humanity and the animal world endures in the hearts of all who knew her. In gardens tended and friendships nurtured, in every tender act of kindness toward animals, Meta's spirit continues to bloom perennial and true.
