Mary Vannette Wells, 79, of Campobello, SC, died peacefully on March 3, 2022 surrounded by those she loved at The Graceful Swan personal care home in Marietta, GA.
Born on February 21, 1943, in Edgefield County to Van Edwards and Alice White Edwards, Vannette was raised by her father and stepmother Mary Gavin Edwards. She grew up in Johnston and graduated from Johnston High School and the University of South Carolina where she earned a Bachelor of Education degree. She married Emory Wells and taught elementary school in Omaha, Nebraska and Greenville, South Carolina before settling in Campobello, where she taught fourth grade for most of her career at Campobello-Gramling School. In addition to teaching elementary school, Vannette also taught in the migrant summer education and adult education programs. Having taught multiple generations of many of the same families over her nearly 40 years at CGS, she made a big impact on her community and made many lifelong friendships.
Known to her grandchildren as Granny Vanny and Gigi, she was devoted to her family. She could be found at baseball and football games cheering on her boys, and spending time with them whenever she could.
She is survived by her two children, Chryse Wells Johnson of Marietta, Georgia and Emory Marshall Wells, Jr. of Campobello, South Carolina and her beloved grandsons, Kyle Wells, Carter Wells, Jake Johnson and Henry Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at Mount of Olives Cemetery in Johnston on April 2 at 2:00. A celebration of life will be held at the Depot in Landrum on April 8 from 5:00-7:00. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
