Mary Elizabeth “Betsy” Holmes, 73 of Johnston, SC entered into rest on February 11, 2026.

 Betsy was born in Augusta, Ga as the daughter of the late Trudy Walker and Horace T. Holmes Sr.

 Betsy was a 1974 graduate of Brenau University, she later earned her master’s degree from Clemson University. As a devoted Clemson fan, she enjoyed sharing special trips to homecoming games with her nieces and nephews.

 She retired as a Corporal from the Columbia Police Department after a dedicated career in law enforcement. She was an avid animal lover throughout her life and volunteered as a foster parent for the Friends of the Animal Shelter (FOTAS) in Aiken. Betsy was a partner of Eureka Farms, the family’s peach farm, which remained close to her heart throughout her life.

 She will be remembered for her generous spirit and the many lives she touched.

 Betsy is survived by her two brothers Joe Holmes and Walker Holmes (Suzanne), many nieces and nephews Allie Holmes Tronoski (Mike), Ryan Holmes Small (Andrew), HT “Tobe” Holmes (Monica), Hunter Holmes Dizdarevic (Tin), Lee Holmes (Elizabeth), Curtis Holmes (Christina), Joannah Holmes Thelen (Chris), Cale Holmes, Callie Holmes Christoffel (Chandler). She was predeceased by a brother H. T. "Tommy" Holmes, Jr.

 A graveside memorial service will be held at 11:00am on Monday, February 23, 2026, at Sunset Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Johnston, SC. Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of the Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to FOTAS at P.O. Box 2207 Aiken, SC 29802.
