Martha Newton Gibson, 99, of Johnston, SC, wife of the late James W. Gibson, entered into rest on Saturday January 8, 2022.
Mrs. Gibson was born January 7, 1923, in Charleston, SC, and was the daughter of the late Emerson Harvey Newton and Mary Kate Alexander Newton. She was a 1943 graduate of Winthrop College. She was a retired teacher, having taught in Aiken and Edgefield County schools. Martha was a long-time member of Harmony United Methodist Church where she was actively involved in many activities. Martha also had a love of music which led her to play the piano for many years at Harmony. Martha was involved with many community organizations through the years.
Survivors include five children Jimmy (Jo) Gibson, Tommy (Melanie) Gibson, Mike (Dixie) Gibson, Kathy Gibson, and Bill (Beth) Gibson. Six grandchildren Nickolas (Martha Campbell) Gibson, Jessica (Ross) Williams, Perrin (Josh) Bryan, LeAnn (Daniel) Smith, Rucker Gibson, and Garrett Gibson. Three great grandchildren Riggs Bryan, Emersyn Smith, and Smith-James Gibson. She was predeceased by a sister Mary Elizabeth Newton.
Graveside service will be held on Monday January 10th at 3pm at Harmony United Methodist Church Cemetery, Johnston, SC. Family will receive friends following the service.
