(Inky) English, 88, of Johnston, S.C., passed away March 10, 2015. Funeral Services will be held Friday March 13, 2015 at 2 PM at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home with burial at Mt. of Olives Cemetery in Johnston, S.C. He was born in Anderson, S.C. on April 29, 1926, son of the late Floyd English and Eva Cartee English. He was a navy veteran. After the Navy he went to Newberry College. There he lettered 4 years in baseball and basketball. He was also cheerleader for Newberry in football. He was inducted into Newberry Hall of Fame class of 1948 on Sept. 28, 2002. In 1948 he was drafted by the Boston Bullets in the first round of the NBA. He decided not to pursue a basketball career instead chose an education. He taught in several different schools and later became principal and coach of Johnston School. He retired from Readers Digest Company and then went to teach at W.E. Parker for several years before retiring. He was Teacher of the Year in 1989. He was also on the Who's Who Among American Colleges and Universities. He was a member of the American Legion and he was a Mason. He loved young people and chaperoned the Teen Town in Johnston on the weekends for several years. Later he was the overseer of several different packing sheds in the county. He is survived by his daughter, Pam Jordan of Leesville, S.C., son Buddy (Robin) English of Johnston, S.C., one grandson, Marty (Melanie) English of Johnston, S.C. and four great grandchildren, Clayton, Dalton, Braxton and Bailey; one brother, Millard English and a sister, Juanita Waldrep. In addition to his parents, he was predeceased by his wives Fairey English, Nancy English, his daughter Donna Moseley, his four brothers Tillman English, Dorsey English, Dr. Carl English and Lee English; one sister Helen Nelson. The family will be at his son's home on Slide Hill Rd., Johnston, SC and will receive friends from 6 to 8 PM on Thursday March 12, 2015 at the Funeral Home.
