May 23, 1938 – May 11, 2024
Luke Quarles of Johnston, SC passed away on May 11, 2024. He attended a one room schoolhouse at Red Hill Baptist Church and Strom Thurmond High School. He left to work at a local mill to help support his family after his father died. Later, he completed his GED. He felt that learning was very important and helped establish Wardlaw Academy in Edgefield, SC. He served 8 yrs in the National Guard. After attending school to become a mechanic. He worked at Herlong Chevrolet GMC, Satcher Ford and Edwards Auto. Luke was a faithful member of Red Hill Baptist Church and Mt Calvery Lutheran Church. He was the youngest of 12 children of Hugh A Quarles and Lilly Mae Harris. He is survived by his two sisters, Ruth Wates and Hazel Thomas, and three children, Janet Papp, Brenda Q Cox, and Amy Quarles, grandchildren are Taylor Miller, Rilee Miller, Michael Cox and Lisa Bishop. His great granddaughter is Callie Singleton. His ashes were interred beside his wife Alice Clark Quarles at Mt Calvery Lutheran church privately.
Luke was a hard worker. He began plowing a field at the age of 4. Their family grew cotton and grew or raised the food they ate. Luke taught by example. He was a hardworking, loving, kind Christian man who taught by example. He will be missed.
