Lon J. Courtney, Jr., 93, of Johnston, South Carolina, died peacefully in his sleep on Wednesday, January 9, 2019, at his home, Cumberland Hills in Aiken, South Carolina.
A graveside service will be held at 3:00 p.m. on Friday, January 11, 2019, at Episcopal Church of Our Savior Cemetery, 212 Church Street, Trenton, South Carolina, with the Doctor Reverend Mark E. Thompson officiating. The family will receive friends following the service at the residence of James and Ellen Courtney, 604 Mims Avenue, Johnston, South Carolina.
The son of Ruby Odom and Lon J. Courtney, Sr., Mr. Courtney was a native of Johnston and a graduate of Johnston High School. Mr. Courtney attended Clemson College until drafted for World War II serving on the U.S.S. MIDAS. He was the retired president of Johnston Petroleum Carriers, Crouch Hardware Inc., and Lon Jay Enterprises. Mr. Courtney also served as the past president of the Johnston Jaycees and the South Carolina Horseshow Association, and a former member of the Johnston Town Council and the Edgefield County Transportation Board.
Mr. Courtney is survived by his wife of 70 years, Averill Boatwright Courtney; a son and daughter-in-law, L. James Courtney III and Ellen; granddaughter, Harriett-Graham Courtney and fiancé, Reed Kramer; grandson, Harrison Tarrant Courtney and wife, Britnee. Mr. Courtney is preceded in death by a daughter, Harriett Courtney Lemke and son-in-law, Jim; a brother, Roger O. Courtney and sister-in-law, Betty Jean.
