Obituary

Julian Maloy Ogden Jr. was born on February 13, 1949, in Augusta, Georgia, and passed away on February 18, 2026, in North Augusta, South Carolina. He was a loving husband, best friend, and adoring grandfather.

Maloy graduated from the Academy of Richmond County and later studied at Augusta Technical College. He retired after 25 years of dedicated service as a merchandiser with CVS Pharmacy.

Maloy was preceded in death by his father, Julian Maloy Ogden Sr.; his mother, Mildred Mae Collins; his sister, Suzanne Ogden McCain; his aunt, Frances Smith; his uncle, “Smitty” Smith; and his cousin, JoAnn Hester.

He is survived by a large and loving family who will miss him dearly, including his wife, Barbara Franklin Ogden; his daughters and stepchildren, Morri Ogden Kernaghan (Jackie), Carrie Ogden Shead (Jeff), Emily Ogden Hart, Todd Franklin (Riecka), David Franklin (Dori), and Dawn Franklin (Todd).

Above all else, Maloy loved his grandchildren and great-grandchildren: Josh Swearingen (Haley, Riggs, and Riley), Morgan Swearingen, Madison Kernaghan, Bryant Shirley (Kelsi, Braylon, Blaine, and Brooke), Byron Shirley (Jimmy-Ann), Ashley Bagwell (Jeremiah, Lane, Maebree, and Sonny), Caleb Shead (Noel), Bryce Smith (Jaeda and Lynleigh), Brody Smith, Julian Brock Smith, Irene Franklin, Amelia Franklin, Rainnon, Esther Franklin, Anne-Marie Franklin, Nate Franklin, and Mikey Franklin.

A “man of many talents,” Maloy’s skills were evident to all who knew him. He loved music, especially rock and roll, and enjoyed playing the guitar. His dry sense of humor charmed those around him, and his confident “I’ve got skills” attitude both got him out of (and occasionally into) trouble as a rebellious teenager. Maloy loved sharing stories of his youth, but he especially enjoyed telling stories about his loving parents, Augusta’s history, and “Ogden’s Pond,” a local swimming hole once named for his late grandfather, Nathan Maloy Ogden. He continued that legacy by naming his own swimming pool “Ogden’s Pool,” which brought great joy to his grandchildren throughout their childhoods.

It is without question that Maloy left a lasting mark on all who knew and loved him.

In accordance with Maloy’s wishes, there will be no public service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the American Lung Association.

To the living, I am gone,

To the sorrowful, I will never return,

To the angry, I was cheated,

But to the happy, I am at peace,

And to the faithful, I have never left.

I cannot speak, but I can listen.

I cannot be seen, but I can be heard.

So as you stand upon a shore gazing at a beautiful sea,

As you look upon a flower and admire its simplicity,

Remember me.

Remember me in your heart:

Your thoughts, and your memories,

Of the times we loved,

The times we cried,

The times we fought,

The times we laughed.

For if you always think of me, I will never have gone.
