Obituary

 John Kenneth Murphy Sr., a distinguished gentleman whose life was marked by dedicated service and enduring commitment to family and community, passed away on June 2, 2026, in Edgefield, South Carolina. Born on March 13, 1946, in Augusta, Georgia, Mr. Murphy’s journey was one of notable accomplishment and heartfelt devotion.

 A 1965 graduate of Strom Thurmond High School, John pursued further education at Columbia Commercial College and Lander University, laying a foundation that would support his varied and impactful career. His professional life was defined by an unwavering dedication to service, exemplified by nearly three decades spent with the South Carolina Army National Guard. Rising to the esteemed rank of Chief Warrant Officer 3 and honorary CWO 4, he displayed leadership, discipline, and a profound sense of duty. Along with his military retirement, he continued to serve the public through his work with the South Carolina Department of Transportation.

 Mr. Murphy’s faith was a guiding pillar throughout his life. He was a cherished member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, where he also served as past president of the Church Council, reflecting his devotion and leadership within his spiritual community. His civic contributions extended beyond the church: he was a retired member of the Edgefield Fire Department, where his commitment to the safety and well-being of others was felt, and he took a past role in the Edgefield Jaycees, demonstrating a lifelong dedication to civic engagement and community improvement.

 Family was at the heart of John Kenneth Murphy Sr.'s existence. He is lovingly survived by his wife, Maylan Grandy Murphy; his son, John Kenneth Murphy Jr., and daughter-in-law, Jennifer; and his daughter, Caron M. Johnson, and son-in-law, Andrew. The legacy of his love continues through his grandchildren Mills Murphy, and wife Natalie; Amelia Murphy; Drew Johnson; and Ben Johnson and extends tenderly to his great-grandchild, Whitaker Murphy. John also leaves behind brothers William “Billy” Murphy, with his wife Patricia, and Thomas P. "Tom"  Murphy, with his wife Judy, who alongside his immediate family will hold his memory dear.

 John’s journey was preceded by his beloved parents and siblings, Eleanor Gingrey Murphy and William A. Murphy, whose foundational guidance shaped the man he became, as well as by his brothers Lawrence “Larry” J. Murphy, with his wife Betty, and Charles A. Murphy, with his wife Laura.

 Friends and loved ones are invited to honor and remember John Kenneth Murphy Sr. with a Rosary at 4:00 PM on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at the Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, located at 801 Columbia Road, Edgefield, SC. Following the Rosary, a visitation will be held at the same location from 5:00 PM until 6:30 PM. The celebration of his life will culminate with a Mass at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, 305 Buncombe Street, Edgefield, SC, beginning at 11:00 AM on Monday, June 8, 2026 with inurnment following in the church cemetery. In lieu of flowers you may make contributions to St. Mary's Catholic Church renovation fund, 302 Jeter St. Edgefield, SC 29824.
