Jimmy Odell McCary, born July 7, 1944, in Edgefield, South Carolina, passed away on August 19, 2026. His life was a testament to hard work, devotion, and commitment to his family.
Jimmy was born in Edgefield, where he was raised by his parents, the late William "Jo Jo" and Theo McCary. He grew up surrounded by the strong bonds of his siblings, sharing life’s early lessons. Throughout his life, the values instilled in him during his childhood became the cornerstone of his character—honesty, perseverance, and love for those around him.
With a sense of duty and a desire to serve his country, Jimmy enlisted in the United States Navy. His military service showed his courage and dedication, leaving a lasting impression on all who served alongside him. Upon his return to civilian life, Jimmy embarked on a career as a self-employed painter. Through his craftsmanship, he touched many homes and lives in his community, always striving for excellence and taking great pride in a job well done. Jimmy was a member of The Edgefield Church of God for over forty years.
Jimmy’s greatest joy was his family. He shared a loving marriage with his wife, Beth, whose unwavering support and companionship enriched his days. Together, they built a life filled with laughter, shared dreams, and cherished memories. Jimmy was a devoted father to his children—James McCary (Heather), Robert Freitas (Missy) , Shane Bryan (Kim), Michelle Lawrence, and pre-deceased by his son Steve. He took immense pride in their accomplishments, always encouraging them to follow their own paths while providing guidance and wisdom. His legacy continues through his fifteen grandchildren and twenty great-grandchildren, who will remember his warm presence.
Jimmy was also a beloved brother to Reggie and sister-in-law Fae. He held dear the memories of his late siblings, two sisters and one brother, and his parents.
Friends and family are invited to celebrate Jimmy Odell McCary’s life during a visitation at Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, located at 801 Columbia Rd, Edgefield, SC 29824, on Friday, August 21, 2026, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. A burial service will be held on Saturday, August 22, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Sunset Gardens Memorial Cemetery, 1339 Columbia Road, Johnston, SC 29832.
The legacy of Jimmy Odell McCary is etched in the hearts of all who knew and loved him. He was a devoted husband, a proud father and grandfather, a respected brother, a dedicated professional, and a proud veteran. His example of steadfastness and kindness will continue to inspire those fortunate enough to have shared in his remarkable life.
