Obituary

Haigh Scott Reiniger, 70, died on June 13, 2024 at the Self Regional Hospital in Greenwood, South Carolina. The only child of the marriage of Haigh McDairmid Reiniger and his wife, Anne Marie Luogameno, he was born in Baltimore, Maryland where his father, an executive with a forest products company, was then working. After early childhood stents in New Orleans and New York City, the Reiniger family moved to Connecticut.

Haigh attended and was graduated from the Choate School in Wallingford, Connecticut. From there he went to Boston University from which he was graduated in 1977. He also attended Boston College School of Law for two years.

After a few years working in finance in Boston, Haigh was enlisted by his father to assist in building a new particle board mill using the patented technology which his father had developed. This major $100 million project, named Reinwood, took them to Louisiana, Alabama and then finally to South Carolina. In the early 1990s they came to Edgefield County at the suggestion of the economic development officials of the state. For nearly a decade they pursued the effort to build this plant on SC Highway 121 between Johnston and Trenton. Unfortunately, they encountered many difficulties along the way, and, in the end, were unable to get the project launched.

For a time during this period, Haigh lived in Aiken on Third Avenue in the equestrian district where he played polo and bike polo. After his Reinwood project was abandoned, Haigh became involved in real estate sales, focusing primarily on rural properties. He later joined Morgan Stanley as a financial advisor, first in San Francisco and then in Charleston. He was married twice and had one daughter, Lindsey Anne Harper Reiniger, who died tragically in 2015.

In 2008, Haigh came to Edgefield where he lived in an apartment at the Magnolia Dale House Museum of the Edgefield County Historical Society. He became an important part of the Edgefield community, using his bicycle to ride all over town. He was the docent at the Joanne T. Rainsford Discovery Center where he always welcomed visitors with enthusiasm. He also actively participated in the Edgefield History Class and in other historical activities. He loved to fish and could often be seen on his bicycle with his fishing rod in hand, heading to one of our local ponds. He was a resident of Edgefield for over fifteen years and brought a unique flavor to the town, always being kind and gentle to all who crossed his path.

During his years here, he wrote and distributed many stories about people and events in his life. Several years ago, he combined these stories and published them in a book entitled DeHaga Int'l Story / The AltoMar File which can be purchased on Amazon.

A funeral service will be held at Willowbrook Cemetery on Saturday afternoon, June 22, 2024 at 4:00 pm, with Mother Lathrop Moseley of the Episcopal Church of the Ridge presiding. A reception at Magnolia Dale will follow.

Arrangements have been entrusted to the care of Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home.
