IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Glenn Richard
Quarles Sr.
August 18, 1954 – December 31, 2024
Glenn Richard Quarles, Sr., born August 18, 1954 in Greenwood, SC to Evia Eccles Quarles and Alvin Rhett Quarles, Sr. passed away peacefully in Roanoke, VA on December 31, 2024, surrounded by his three children.
Glenn excelled academically, graduating as co-valedictorian of his class at Strom Thurmond High School in Johnston, SC and went on to his beloved USC as a Thornwell scholar in physics.
He graduated from the Medical University of South Carolina and completed his residency training at the University of South Carolina in Columbia. He spent most of his career serving underserved rural communities in Northeast Tennessee and Southwest Virginia.
Glenn poured his personality and love into his three children, to whom he often referred as his "Magnum Opus": Virginia Quarles Moore (John), Glenn Richard Quarles, Jr. (Calandra), and George Ernest Quarles (Megan). As a father, he was loving, selfless, compassionate, and, above all, unmatched in his boundless sarcasm. Each of the three confidently claims the title of 'favorite child.'
Glenn was a quiet, calm, and steadfast presence. Yet the moment he joined a conversation, he transformed into the life of the party—funny, charismatic, and "Jeopardy smart." His remarkable intelligence allowed him to discuss any topic with ease and insight. A passionate cinephile, Glenn had a knack for summarizing films with a flair that rivaled Roger Ebert's and could effortlessly name directors of even the most obscure movies.
Glenn leaves a legacy of nine grandchildren: Isaiah Robert Moore, Lydia Renee Moore, Daniel Richard Moore, Lillian Eva Quarles, Graham Rhett Quarles, Brooks Markeson Quarles, Benjamin Miller Quarles, Vivian Ella Quarles, and Gwendolyn Monet Quarles. They love their grandpa and cherish memories of fishing, watching movies, and laughing with him.
Preceding him in death are his mother, Evia Eccles Quarles, His brother Alvin Rhett Quarles, Jr., and his father Alvin Rhett Quarles, Sr.
