Ernest Lee Boatwright Jr., born on March 19, 1953, in Edgefield, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, in Saluda, South Carolina. He was a retired, dedicated professional who built a respected career as a heavy equipment operator in the construction industry, demonstrating a steadfast work ethic and commitment to his profession.
Ernest was born as the son to the late Vermel and Ernest Boatwright, Sr., he was a lifelong resident of Johnston, South Carolina. Ernest remained deeply connected to his roots and community throughout his life. He was a man of strong Baptist faith, which served as a guiding force in his personal and professional life.
Ernest is survived by his beloved wife, Betty Boatwright, who stood by his side through all of life’s challenges and joys. Together, they raised a family that was the center of Ernest’s world. His children, Ernest Boatwright III and his wife Taylor, and Christy M. Boatwright, carry forward his legacy of integrity and hard work. He took immense pride in his grandchildren—Cloey M. Lipe, Kaiden Buff, and Colten Boatwright—who brought him great happiness and laughter.
In addition to his immediate family, Ernest leaves behind his sister, Catherine Brewer, and brother, Eugene Boatwright, who shared his early years and remained close throughout their lives.
Ernest Lee Boatwright Jr.’s life was marked by dedication, both to his family and his profession. He is mourned by all who knew him and will be missed.
The family extends their gratitude for the support and condolences during this difficult time. Ernest’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who loved him and in the community he served with unwavering commitment.
A graveside service will be held at 1:00pm, Thursday, May 21, 2026, at Sunset Gardens Memorial Cemetery in Johnston, South Carolina. In lieu of flowers you may send funeral contributions to Mercantile Funeral Home Johnston Chapel, PO Box 389, Edgefield, SC 29824 or call the funeral home.
