Obituary

Ruth Youngblood Sharrock, Ed.D., passed away peacefully in her home in Edgefield, SC on October 5, 2020. After 93 years on this earth, she heard the Lord's golden bells ring for her, calling her to the land beyond the river, the sweet forever. She had been slowly declining the last few months, but she was not in any pain or distress – physically, mentally, or emotionally. Her family knows that was because her faith was in God and Jesus. She served her living Savior faithfully for decades, through earthly victories and sorrowful burdens. Dr. Sharrock was the only surviving child of Naomi and Marvin Youngblood and a native of Chattanooga, TN. While she was a small child, her father answered God's calling to preach and so she grew up as a Baptist preacher's kid. Her parents bought a piano on an installment plan and found a piano teacher in Chattanooga who would teach her how to play for church worship and revival services. She graduated from Carson-Newman University in 1947. She married Roger Sharrock on June 26, 1948. She was 20 and he was 18. She made her own wedding dress suit and her father officiated. Before their marriage, Roger had heard God's calling for him to preach and be a pastor, and Rev. Youngblood was his mentor. Roger needed to obtain a college degree, so it was a few years before he was able to answer that calling as a bi-vocational pastor. Ruth was his helpmate and supported him in all his endeavors. Ruth and Roger both earned graduate degrees in education: master's degrees at UNC-Chapel Hill and doctoral degrees at UNC-Greensboro. They did this while rearing their five children, working fulltime as educators, and serving God in various church roles. They worked as a team, best demonstrated in the duets they sang in church. Ruth played the piano and sang alto while Roger sang tenor. They made history when, as the out-going moderator of the Edgefield Baptist Association, Roger kissed Ruth and presented her the gavel as the new in-coming moderator. She was one of the few women to serve as moderator of a Baptist association in South Carolina. She also served five years on the executive board of the SC Baptist Convention. Their retirement plan of RV-camping while traveling the country was short-lived due to Roger's illness with kidney failure and his death in 1996. Shortly before he died, he surprised Ruth and the family by renting an advertising billboard in Edgefield and expressing his love and thanks to her for 48 years of marriage. Dr. Sharrock is survived by her children Renée Sharrock and Susan & David Marshall; her grandchildren Andrew Sharrock and Blue & JW Blanchard; and her great-grandchildren Rena, Denman, Landon, Gavin, and Naomi Blanchard. Along with her husband and her parents, she was predeceased by her sons David, Mark, and Barry Sharrock, and her grandson Buck Marshall. Dr. Sharrock used every opportunity to teach, whether it was a life lesson, a Biblical lesson, or a music lesson. Rejoice with her family that she is singing praises and playing her special rendition of "When They Ring the Golden Bells" for our Lord God in heaven. Her family expresses thanks to those who helped care for her during her last months: Latravia Brown and Ellen Miles with Hands of Life Home Care Services; and Cindy Bryan with Traditions Health hospice service. Memorials may be given to the Edgefield Baptist Association (985 Hwy 25, Edgefield, SC 29824) or to the Red Hill Baptist Church Cemetery Fund (PO Box 17, Edgefield, SC 29824).
