Lovick Mims Jr., passed away peacefully at her home on November 5, 2011. Born on March 19, 1922 in Memphis, Tennessee, she was the daughter of the late Rose Jefferies Hart and James Elliott Hart. After graduating as Valedictorian from Central High School, Memphis, she entered Winthrop College, graduating in 1944. She also held a MS in Library Science from the University of North Carolina-Chapel Hill. In 1992, Mrs. Mims retired from the Medical College of Georgia Library as an Associate Professor with 29 years of service, having served as a Reference Librarian and later as the Librarian for Special Collections. In addition to her career with the MCG Library, she also served on the Edgefield County Library Board for over 50 years. Mrs. Mims was a member of Trinity Episcopal Church, Edgefield for over 60 years, serving on the Altar Guild, vestry and teaching Sunday school. As the unofficial historian, she was responsible for digitally organizing membership records dating back to the late 1800's, thereby creating an invaluable resource for genealogical research. Survivors include her son, B. Lovick Mims III (Helen) and daughters, Sarah Sheppard Mims of Asheville, NC and Kem Mims Schroeder (Tom) of Winston-Salem, NC. Also surviving her are her four grandchildren: Courtenay B. Mims, Ben L. Mims IV, Katie S. Schroeder, and Cyrus D. Schroeder. Services for Mrs. Mims will be held on Saturday November 12, 2011 at 1:00 PM at Trinity Episcopal Church, Edgefield, with burial to follow in Willowbrook Cemetery. The family will host a reception at the home on Gray Street immediately following the services.
