Donald H. Slate Jr., a vibrant figure who touched countless lives with his outgoing and outspoken personality, passed away on June 13, 2026, in Graniteville, South Carolina. Born on April 27, 1955, in Edgefield, SC, Donald's life was woven with deep connections to his roots, cherished family, and the joy he found in simple pleasures.
Known affectionately by many as "The Night Hawk" on CB Radio channel 31, Donald embraced this hobby since the 1970s with a passion that highlighted his love for communication and camaraderie. Beyond the airwaves, he found relaxation and happiness in fishing and playing pool—pastimes that perfectly mirrored his fun disposition.
Donald's heart was most full when surrounded by family and friends. He leaves behind a loving companion of 27 years, Pamela Smith, whose steadfast presence was a source of comfort and joy. His son, Michael P. Slate, and wife Melanie, alongside his daughter, Donna S. Lopez, continue to carry his legacy forward with strength and love. He also embraced his extended family with open arms having raised for most of their lives, his daughters Shannon Kline and husband Chad, Cheyenne Powell and husband Bradley, and son Daniel Pace and wife Carine, all of whom were blessed by his kindness. The many grandchildren who adored him—and the soon-to-be great-grandchild stand as living testaments to the enduring love he cultivated throughout his life.
Donald was preceded in death by his parents, Lequita Hover Slate and Donald Hopkins Slate Sr., whose memories he cherished deeply, as well as his son D.J. Slate, whose loss remains a poignant chapter in the family’s story.
A visitation honoring Donald's memory will be held on June 18, 2026, from 10:00 a.m. to 11:00 a.m. at the Edgefield Mercantile Funeral Home, located at 801 Columbia Rd, Edgefield, SC 29824. Following will be a graveside service will take place at Eastview Cemetery on Eastview Road, Edgefield, SC, beginning at 11:30 a.m.
Though Donald has departed, the warmth of his companionship, his lively spirit, and the love he so generously gave will forever reside in the hearts of those who knew him. His story is one of heartfelt connection, spirited joy, and an enduring presence that will shine brightly in the memories of all who were blessed to share in his journey.
