Mr. Slate was born in Augusta, GA and was the son of Donald H. Slate. Jr. and Sandra Harmon Hayes. He was a Self-employed carpenter. Survivors include his fiancé, Samantha Hiers; one son, Caleb Coltman; one daughter, Kailey Nicole Slate; one brother, Michael Paul Slate; and one great aunt, Inez Black.
