IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Clarence Perry
Rauton Jr.
June 19, 1947 – June 1, 2023
Clarence Perry Rauton, Jr., 75, of Johnston, SC entered eternal rest with the Lord on Thursday, June 1, 2023. With unwavering faith, a skilled medical team, and a loving family, he bravely battled pancreatic cancer for nearly 4 years.
Known as "Tumpy" to many in the community and as "Papa" to his adoring grandchildren. Mr. Rauton was a lifelong native of Johnston, SC and the son to the late Clarence Perry Rauton, Sr., and Lucy Mitchell Rauton. He attended Strom Thurmond High School and upon graduation in 1965 he attended Georgia Military School for two years. Mr. Rauton loved his country and proudly served in the Vietnam War as a member of the United States Air Force from 1968 to 1972. He returned home after the war to follow in his father's footsteps as a farmer in the peach industry. Mr. Rauton found peace on earth by spending time outdoors farming his personal property, planting food plots for the deer, fishing in nearby ponds or simply listening to all the soothing sounds of God's creation. He loved the beauty of the changing seasons. In the fall, he marveled at how the maple trees lit up the wood line and how the dogwood trees stood out with their painted leaves. During the winter he looked forward to holiday dinners with family, a warm fire and a hot cup of coffee. Spring and summer were spent busily working on his bountiful garden, the yard near his home and his Turkey Creek property. He was an extraordinary cook, talented mechanic, and skilled carpenter. To his son, Tump and daughter, Tori, he could accomplish anything imaginable. He loved animals of all kinds and faithfully provided food to wildlife on his property and was always prepared to feed a stray pet he encountered along the roadside. Mr. Rauton was honored to be received as a member of Philippi Baptist Church and especially enjoyed his visits with Pastor Josh McClendon throughout his cancer battle. A good laugh was easy to have with him as he loved "cutting up" with treasured friends, family, and people he stumbled upon in everyday life. Mr. Rauton was a devoted father, grandfather, brother, and friend to many. He was deeply loved by all who knew him and will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his son, Clarence "Tump" Perry Rauton III, of Johnston, SC, daughter Victoria "Tori" Rauton Ambos (Charles Henry Ambos) of Lexington, SC, grandchildren, Mary Grace Ambos and Matthew Henry Ambos both of Lexington, SC, sisters Anne Rauton Smith (Clyde Smith), Charlene Rauton Jackson (Billy Jackson) both of Johnston, SC, and Lucy Jane Rauton Rogers (Danny Rogers) of Aiken, SC, brother, Thomas Mitchell Rauton (Allison Rauton) of Johnston, SC and many beloved relatives.
A graveside service will be held at Mount of Olives Cemetery, Mims Avenue, Johnston, SC, 29832, on Wednesday, June 7th, 2023 at 11:00am. Pastor Josh McClendon of Philippi Baptist Church will be officiating the service. In lieu of flowers please send remembrances to Philippi Baptist Church, 125 Steeple Road, Johnston, SC 29832, or an animal rescue facility of your choice.
