Obituary

Charles (Chuck) Edward Breuer, Jr., 92, of Frisco TX and Edgefield, SC, entered into rest on September 26, 2026.

Chuck was born August 11, 1934, to the late Nancy Lunney and Charles Breuer, Sr. in Charleston, SC. He grew up surrounded by a large extended family. Chuck loved to tell stories of his childhood: going for pistachio ice cream at the windmill-shaped ice cream shop with his uncles; going on his first date with Nella Creech to the movies when they were 6 years old, buying great big water melons and hauling them home in his Red Flyer wagon.

He attended Charleston County public schools, leaving at age 17 to serve in the Coast Guard during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, Chuck enrolled at the University of South Carolina. While an undergrad, He met his future wife, Ann Williams, at a hospital emergency room where she worked as a nurse. They married on August 11, 1957, at Ann’s childhood home in Edgefield. Their first daughter, Deanne Elaine, was born May 17, 1958. Over the years, their family grew to include Karen Ann, Kathryn Ramona, and Edward Allen.

Chuck earned his A.B and M.Ed degrees in Psychology in from University of SC. He began his professional career as a counselor and Distributed Education teacher for Greenwood County schools, then moved on to become a civilian personnel officer for the Air Force. He joined the US Air Force Reserves during the Cuban Missile Crisis.

In 1967, Chuck entered the doctoral program in psychology at the University of South Carolina. He worked for Newberry County Schools as a psychologist while completing his dissertation. After earning his Ph.D. in Educational Psychology in 1970 and becoming a licensed psychologist, he joined Baptist College at Charleston (now Charleston Southern University) as Chairman of the Department of Education. Dr. Breuer was instrumental in building the graduate studies program in education and achieving the program’s accreditation in 1986. His work at Baptist College left a legacy of teachers and guidance counselors all over the state. He used to say, “Not bad for a poor boy from Charleston who got kicked out of two high schools!”

After leaving Charleston Southern University, Chuck worked for Dorchester County Schools. Chuck and Ann moved to Edgefield in 1991 to be closer to Ann’s family. He worked for the Merriweather school district until his retirement in 1996.

Chuck was a man of many hobbies and enjoyed his retirement years to the fullest. He authored several novels in addition to a chronicle of his youth, Doing the Charleston, A Geechee Memoir. A self-taught guitarist, Chuck enjoyed singing duets with Ann and recording his music. Chuck was also an avid photographer. He founded a photography club, published the E-Cap Journal newsletter, and organized an art show at the Edgefield library. He loved collecting guns and knives of all types, including antique firearms. Chuck was also interested in carpentry. He built an enclosure for Ann’s keyboard, made many repairs and improvements to Ann’s family farmhouse where they lived, and single-handedly built a cabin next to the farmhouse.

Chuck is pre-deceased by his wife, Ann Williams Breuer, daughter Deanne Elaine Breuer and sisters Mary Brady and Helen Gillham.

Chuck is survived by his brother William (Bill) Breuer, children Karen Breuer (Frisco, TX), Kathryn (Shane) Goddard (Proctor, WV), and Edward (Lynda) Breuer (Ladson, SC).
