Obituary

Anne Mullan Alexander, "Poo"

September 27, 1948 – June 5, 2024

On the afternoon of June 5, 2024, a thunderstorm rolled into Ridge Spring, SC. Poo's children opened the windows so she could enjoy the storm, as she loved to do. And as the storm passed, her soul left also so she could go home to God.

Poo was born September 27, 1948, in Lynchburg, VA to the late Cecil Stevens and Henry Harper Mullan. She was the oldest of three children. Although she spent much of her life away, her roots were always in Virginia. Poo attended Salem College in Winston Salem, NC. Upon graduation, she moved to Charlotte where she met her Tigger. They were married on August 7, 1971. Together, Poo and Tigger raised their four children in a restored hunting lodge at 3853 Sedgewood Circle in Charlotte.

Poo was known as a gracious hostess, which to her meant making sure that people felt welcomed and comfortable. She thought carefully about how to transform any environment into a place where people would want to come and gather. She was naturally curious, generous, and genuinely interested in other people. Speaking with Poo meant you had her full attention, and, for her, the details mattered. She went above and beyond to ensure every job she did was done well. She maintained detailed lists and had high expectations for herself. At the same time, the details reflected her thoughtfulness and how deeply she cared for others. She planted wintersweet by her drive so that when her children came home, as they often did, they would be greeted by its fragrance as soon as they stepped out of their cars. She always wrote thank you notes, not just for gifts but also to show her appreciation for people whenever they made an effort. Her house, always the family gathering place, mirrored her creativity, sense of beauty, and grace. Of course, Poo also knew how to have a good time and celebrate, as those who attended her infamous surprise bosom-buddy themed birthday party for Tigger can attest to.

Direct and hardworking, Poo had a strong sense of integrity that permeated every aspect of her life. She valued service and actively participated in many organizations, including the Charlotte Junior League, Historic Rosedale, Christ Church in Charlotte, and Episcopal Church of the Ridge as well as many others. Poo began a successful career in real estate in 1996, and in 1998 became the Head Broker in Charge at the Allen Tate office at South Park in Charlotte. She was well respected and known as someone who was tough but fair. Poo never shied away from a hard conversation because she felt that respect was best shown by being direct and forthright while also being kind. She set the example that allowed other people to shine.

As her family grew, so did Poo's pride in her children, each of whom benefited from the example of love and partnership Poo and Tigger's marriage was known for. Part of her legacy is the deep friendship and love her children, their spouses, and grandchildren all share with one another. Poo and Tigger retired to Ridge Spring, SC in 2017 to live at Fair Pines Plantation, Tigger's childhood home. She felt grateful and lucky to live there and enjoyed starting each day with a cup of coffee while watching the birds at the feeder before getting ready for her Church responsibilities and frequent visits from friends and family. At the end of her life, Poo was diagnosed with Multiple Systems Atrophy, a rare degenerative disease. She accepted her diagnosis, never complained, and continued to live her life with grace and dignity.

Survivors include her husband Richard "Tigger" Boatwright Alexander, her sons Fred Calvin Alexander III (Holly) and Richard Boatwright Alexander Jr. (Christie), her daughters Elizabeth Spotswood Spencer (Glen) and Louise Boatwright Vaughn (Damon), and her eight grandchildren: Fred Calvin Alexander IV, June Jerrell Alexander, Sarah Audrey Alexander, Montgomery Spotswood Alexander, Richard Boatwright Alexander III, Elizabeth Boatwright Vaughn, Henry Marsh Vaughn, and Oliver Sage Floyd.

God has called His daughter home.
