Obituary

Ann Williams Breuer, 90, of Edgefield, SC, entered into rest on September 12, 2024.

She was born on January 25, 1934, to the late Henry Herbert and Sarah Mae Graham Williams.

Ann grew up on a one horse farm off a dirt road in the Cleora community of Edgefield County. She lived with her extended family in a farmhouse with no electricity or indoor plumbing, and fireplaces for warmth in the winter. Her Aunt Annie cooked the family's meals on a wood burning stove. Ann's father, known as Pop, owned a country store. Her Mama and Aunt Alma were teachers in the one room elementary schoolhouse Ann attended. The family attended church at Gilgal Baptist Church most Sundays. Sometimes the creek was too high and the road too muddy from rain, and they couldn't attend.

As a preschooler, Ann loved to walk to the barn with Buck, the farm hand. She played with kittens in the barn loft and helped milk the mean old cow. She grew into an animal-loving tomboy who climbed every tree on the farm, went hunting with a .22 rifle, sat on the pigs in the pigpen, and teased their patient farm horse Maude. She followed her brother Norwood and his friends around every chance she could.

Ann took two buses every day to get to Edgefield High School, where she was a member of the Glee Club. She became lifelong friends with Juanita Byrd Bartley, Florence Bartley Corley, Lunette Langley Christie and Sara Hammond. A favorite summer pastime of the friends was skinny dipping in Turkey Creek. Ann and her friends also liked to go to the little country store her Pop owned to get snacks. They always promised to pay him back the next week, but of course they never did. Pop didn't mind.

Ann graduated in 1955 from the Columbia Hospital School of Nursing and became an RN. She met her future husband, Charles (Chuck) Edward Breuer, Jr, while living and working in Columbia. Chuck was a former Coast Guard sailor and a student at the University of South Carolina. They went to see a movie at the theater near the state capitol building for their first date. A street photographer took a photo of the handsome young couple. They were dressed to impress – Chuck in a suit and Ann in a dress borrowed from her roommate.

The couple married on August 11, 1957, in Preacher Croft's home, followed by a small reception in the family farmhouse. During their honeymoon phase they lived in an apartment near USC so Chuck could finish his degree.

Their first daughter, Deanne Elaine, was born May 17, 1958. Ann became a devoted full-time mother. Over the years, their family grew to include Karen Ann, Kathryn Ramona, and Edward Allen. Ann made sure that family life was full of love, fun, and laughter. A favorite family pastime was a tongue twister contest, which always dissolved into gales of laughter. Can you say "A Pack of Pesky Pixies" five times correctly? Ann couldn't.

The family moved all over the state of South Carolina as Chuck pursued his educational and career goals, culminating in Charleston, where Chuck became head of the Education Department at Baptist College (now Charleston Southern University).

Upon Chuck's retirement, Ann and Chuck moved back to her childhood farmhouse in Cleora. Ann rejoined Gilgal Baptist Church, sang in the church choir, and taught the Senior Ladies Sunday School class for over 25 years.

When the old farmhouse became too much to handle, they moved to their house in town on Thurmond St. Ann could walk from her home to the homes of her sisters, Aline and Miriam. The sisters spent many happy years going all over Edgefield and Augusta as best buddies. In her 80's Ann took up her tree-climbing hobby again and climbed a magnolia tree every year on her birthday.

Ann is pre-deceased by her daughter Deanne Elaine Breuer and siblings Aline Crouch, Miriam Saggus, and Norwood Williams.

Ann is survived by her husband Chuck, children Karen Breuer, Kathryn (Shane) Goddard, and Edward (Linda) Breuer. Also, grandchildren Derek Rogers, Kelly Rogers Read, Joshua Goddard, Matthew Breuer, Jessica White McNeil and great grand-children Ferris Read, Kellan Read, Madi Goddard, Lincoln Goddard, Riley Kay McNeil, and Kinsley Grace McNeil.

The celebration of life will be held at 11:00am Saturday, September 14, 2024, at Gilgal Baptist Church, 333 Gilgal Rd, Edgefield, SC. The family will receive friends at the church at 10:00am, one hour before the service.
