Obituary for Julian Pickens Bland, Jr.

Julian Pickens Bland, Jr., born on Christmas Day 1928, a retired United States Air Force Lt. Colonel, died Thursday, June 20, 2019.
Jule, as he was known to friends, was born in Augusta, Georgia. He was the son of the late Anna Snow Bland and Julian Pickens Bland. He was a 1950 graduate of Clemson College with a B.S. degree in Economics and History. Upon graduation he returned to Johnston to work with his father at Bland Chevrolet. While vacationing with friends at Pawley’s Island, in June 1950, he met the love of his life, Ann W. Coile of Abbeville. They were blessed with more than 67 years of marriage.
Flying was Jule’s passion. An aviator since the age of 17, Jule loved the freedom of flight, especially when he was flying one of his own planes. His 28 years of Air Force service allowed him to experience the world. Jule was especially fond of the time spent in the western United States. Colorado always held a special place in his heart. While in the Air Force, Jule served in the Vietnam War, and was decorated as a Bronze Star, Vietnam Service Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Republic of Vietnam Campaign Medal, and Republic of Vietnam Gallantry Cross recipient. After retirement from the United States Air Force, he worked for Lockheed Martin Corporation.
Upon retirement, Jule was able to utilize his time and talents as a volunteer with the Langley Air Force Base Aero Club, and as a docent for the Virginia Air and Space Center in Hampton, Virginia. He was a member of Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church in Lexington.
He is survived by his wife, Ann Bland; son, Julian Bland, III (Joy); daughter, Dr. Marian Bland; grandsons, Julian Bland, IV, and Joshua Bland. He was preceded in death by a sister, Katherine Bland Sawyer.
Services for Julian Pickens Bland will be held at 4 p.m. on Sunday, June 23, 2019 at Johnston Presbyterian Church, Johnston, South Carolina with burial to follow in the Mount of Olives Cemetery. The family will receive friends beginning at 3 p.m. in the fellowship hall of Johnston Presbyterian Church.
Memorials may be made to The Samuel J. Cadden Chapel, Clemson University, in care of Brandy Page, 110 Daniel Drive, Clemson, SC 29631 or Saxe Gotha Presbyterian Church, 5503 Sunset Boulevard, Lexington, SC 29072.
